Julian Scheffer Publishes Paper on Compassion Choice

Julian Scheffer (with Daryl Cameron and Michael Inzlicht) has published a new paper “Caring is costly: People avoid the cognitive work of compassion” in Journal of Experimental Psychology: General. In this paper, the authors examine people’s preferences to choose or avoid compassion (vs. empathy, and vs. objective detachment), and how this tracks with perceived cognitive costs of compassion. The research speaks to broader ethical debates about the role of compassion in moral behavior. Preprint available here: https://psyarxiv.com/jyx6q/
